John Maeda Design Archive 前田約翰設計檔案
John Maeda is an American technologist, entrepreneur, and artist working in the fields of computer-based generative art and computational design. Early in his career, he was also an educator and Web 2.0 era trailblazer. His design work explores human interface design, generative graphics, and computational aesthetics .
Maeda studied computer science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he was subsequently a professor and the MIT Media Lab associate director of research for over a decade . While in charge of the Media Lab, he formed the Aesthetics + Computation group, a team of researchers interested in both coding and design. Members of this group developed a number of influential projects, such as Processing, an electronic sketchbook and coding education tool designed by Ben Fry and Casey Reas. Maeda later developed Design by Numbers to teach artists and visual designers how to code. Scratch, another programming environment designed as an educational tool for disadvantaged students, followed. After his departure from MIT in 2008, Maeda served as president of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where he spearheaded the United States Congressional STEAM Caucus (an initiative to integrate the arts and other disciplines into STEM subject programmes). After leaving RISD he moved into the commercial sector, where he has worked for various organisations, including Kleiner Perkins (then KPCB), Publicis Sapient, and Microsoft.
This archive contains five groups of sketchbooks and loose sheets, which include Maeda’s notes, design drawings, scripting languages, shading models , typography, interfaces, and layout designs.
