Excerpts from the Diamond Sutra, an important Buddhist scripture about the nature of impermanence, dominate the composition oft his recent painting by Fong Chung-Ray, a member of the Fifth Moon Society in Taiwaninthe1960s.Thesquarely composed characters—as if copied by a child—and patches of acrylic in earthy tones were transfer-printed and layered onto the canvas by hand. In result, thepainting’s surface resembles the patterns of ceramic crackles or the texture of dilapidated walls, bringing an aesthetic of decay. The Buddhist texts, some obscured andothers visible, aretestaments to Fong’s understanding of decay as a transient stage in the cycle of material transformations.
