In this video work, artist Phyllis Baldino composes a quick succession of close-up shots showing people’s hands as they sift through papers, rifle through drawers, or dig into handbags in search of missing items. In some clips, these searchers speak about the object of their search or lament their lack of success; in others, the target of the hunt remains a mystery. A sense of urgency is heightened by the rapid pace of the footage, while its incompleteness—viewers almost never see the seekers’ faces, hear their names, or learn additional context—baffles any attempt to draw out a coherent narrative. In this way, the viewer’s desire for more information becomes a frustrated search in its own right, mirroring the fruitless efforts onscreen. Together, these fragments illuminate how the ever-expanding material trappings of modern life can overwhelm our attempts to contain and organise them.
