A Flags-Raising-Lowering Ceremony at My Home’s Clothes Drying Rack我家晾衣架上的升/降旗儀式
2007
Hong Kong artist Kwan Sheung Chi invited fellow artists Wong Wai Yin—his partner—and Lee Kit to sew and paint the flags of China, Hong Kong SAR, and the United Kingdom. He then recorded his parents using their clothes-drying rack—a window design feature included in many Hong Kong building complexes—to hang the flags before raising and lowering them at will. A soundtrack alternating between the anthems corresponding to each flag adds to this performative action in everyday space.
By connecting the outgoing and incoming countries governing Hong Kong, Kwan subverts the perception of the flags as unifying symbols of national pride and acknowledges the anxieties and uncertainties of Hong Kong residents across generation.
