All for the Winner, “You use RMB in a vending machine in Hong Kong? Are you crazy?”賭聖:「用人民幣買香港汽水,你傻啦?」
2008
Chow Chun-fai’s All for the winner, ‘You use RMB in a vending machine in Hong Kong? Are you crazy?’ is part of the series Painting on Movie, which he began in 2006. Painting stills from movies, Chow pays homage to Hong Kong cinema with wit and humour. The subject of this work is a scene from the 1990 comedy All for the Winner, directed by Jeffrey Lau and Corey Yuen, which follows a young man from mainland China with a supernatural gift who transforms himself into a highly successful gambler in Hong Kong to win the heart of a woman. In the painting, the film’s protagonist—played by Stephen Chow—is chided by a Hong Kong policeman for attempting to use Chinese currency in a vending machine. Reflecting upon Hong Kong’s rapidly changing economic environment, Chow singles out a particularly poignant scene that addresses the subject of cross-border misunderstandings and their comedic potential, against a backdrop of pre-handover anxiety. In this series, Chow uses painting as a discursive medium in reframing film as an important site of sociopolitical history.
