An egg depicts the simple act of breaking eggs into a bowl. The work represents Kan Xuan’s early experimentation with video as a medium to depict everyday elements of life. In a close-up view, the artist’s gloved hands knock two eggs together until cracks appear. Kan squeezes the cracked egg, and the white and yolk ooze into the bowl. She repeats the action and, at the end, struggles to remove the sticky gloves. An egg homes in on an extremely banal activity, inviting the viewer to consider the way capturing a mundane act on video can prompt a new relationship to it.
