My PRD Stories: Back Home with Baudelaire is the first video in a series of works by MAP Office—the multidisciplinary Hong Kong–based platform devised by Laurent Gutierrez and Valérie Portefaix —chronicling textual and visual documentation related their research projects carried out in the Pearl River Delta. Back Home with Baudelaire documents the voyage of the Baudelaire, a French-registered container ship sailing from the port of Shenzhen to Hong Kong. Gutierrez and Portefaix undertook lengthy negotiations with the port authorities of both cities to film the ship’s short voyage. The work focuses on the commercial network in the Pearl River Delta, which has grown closer since the handover of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to China in 1997.
MAP Office (established Hong Kong, 1996) is a multidisciplinary platform co-devised by Laurent Gutierrez (b. 1966, Morocco) and Valérie Portefaix (b. 1969, France). Using a variety of expressions such as drawing, photography, video, installations, performance, and literary and theoretical texts, their work on physical and imaginary territories forms a critique of spatio-temporal anomalies, and documents how human beings subvert and appropriate space.
