Sheng and Dan are roles in traditional Chinese opera. Male performers who play Dan are called Qiandan, and female performers who play Sheng are called Kunsheng. From their vocal techniques to their body postures, the performers need to break away from the limits of their innate gender to achieve complete similitude with their characters from form to spirit.
