Beautiful cloud is an animated video that explores the cruelty of humanity and the terror of nuclear weapons. The work features puppets gathered to watch scenes of war, terrorism, and an international summit meeting on a big screen, accompanied by a rock soundtrack from Zuoxiao Zuzhou’s 1998 album The Lost Master. The work negotiates the meaning of the mushroom cloud, an iconic image associated with the destructive power of nuclear weapons, particularly those dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. But Zhou Xiaohu’s puppets only see it as a ‘beautiful cloud’. The work contains a disturbing mix of innocence, horror, and the uncanny.
