This is a poster for the Association for Manekineko Japan, a club established in 1993 in Gunma Prefecture to celebrate maneki neko—the iconic ‘beckoning cat’. With legends dating back to the Edo period, this cat is the most widely recognised symbol of good fortune in Japan. In the poster, three maneki neko stand in the centre of the composition against a backdrop of a rising sun, another—much more fraught—symbol and a motif in Yokoo Tadanori’s body of work. The cat’s association with faith is reinforced by the presence of Shinto elements such as the torii and the prayers for good health and peace in the household written on the gate’s pillars. Yokoo combines symbols from religious tradition and popular belief with an informal, irreverent graphic sensibility, offering a comment on the rereading of cultural heritage in contemporary Japan.
