Annie Lai Kuen Wan is known for her ceramic replicas of everyday objects that explore the relationship between time and the material world. In the video element of this installation, the artist appears to read The Tides of Time: Hong Kong Society in Pictures 1960-1985 by Cheng Po Hung, a book that documents the changing social landscape of Hong Kong. While turning every page of the book, Wan also brushes it with clay, a time-consuming and meticulous process that transforms the book into an unglazed ceramic object. Titled The Tides of Time, the fossil-like sculpture and film demonstrate Wan’s ongoing interest in ephemerality of life, using clay’s tangible form.
