The title and composition of Changing Orbit suggests a celestial subject. The work combines Hon Chi Fun’s immaculate airbrush techniques with his expressive brushwork and gestural abstraction, showing Hon’s interest in Pop Art–inspired palettes of complementary and contrasting colours. The splashes of saturated reds and blues are layered across the canvas, creating a dizzying depth of colours and textures. With its long, horizontal composition, Hon offers a partial view of his subject set against an opaque black sky, evoking a satellite view of a planet from space. The circle, a recurring theme in Hon’s artistic practice since the late 1960s, gives form to the artist’s investigations into Taoism, spirituality, and phenomenology.
