China After Mao—Ma Desheng Calls For Artistic Freedom, Beijing 毛以後的中國──北京,馬德升演講要求藝術自由
1979
This photograph depicts the artist Ma Desheng speaking in front of a crowd of young people. His raised right arm suggests that he speaks with force, and the handle of a crutch is visible under his left arm. The audience listens intently, and some hold up square placards. The photograph is part of photojournalist Liu Heung-Shing’s China after Mao series, consisting of photographs taken between 1976 and 1983. The series bears witness to the transformations in China after the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976) and documents significant events from the period. Ma was a leader of the Stars Group of artists, who advocated for freedom of artistic expression in China in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The collective organised a protest march to Beijing’s city hall—where the photograph was taken—in response to the forced closure of their exhibition on the park railings outside the National Art Museum of China in Beijing in 1979.
Liu Heung Shing (born 1951, Hong Kong) graduated from Hunter College of The City University of New York in 1975. A former foreign correspondent and photojournalist for Time and the Associated Press, Liu was posted to China, the United States, Korea, India, and the former Soviet Union between 1976 and 1988. As a photojournalist, he documents daily life. Liu lives and works in Beijing.
