This painting belongs to a series of the same title, which Qi Zhilong started in 1995. It depicts an anonymous Chinese fashion model or actress in the new society, dressed in a Mao suit and posed in a manner that’s reminiscent of the Communist ideal of uniformity. The heroic scale of the artwork recalls Mao Zedong’s portraits and propaganda paintings during the Cultural Revolution. This work represents a key characteristic of Political Pop and offers rich visual references to elucidate the contradictions of Communism, consumerism, and popular culture in Chinese society in the 1990s.
