Circa is a comment on the rapid growth and transformation of Mumbai, where bamboo poles used as scaffolding in construction sites are ubiquitous. The work consists of 120 sculptural elements in resin and steel resembling bamboo poles and arranged as scaffolding. Jitish Kallat decorated the surface with representations of peacocks, snakes, and monkeys, animals that have strong connections to Mumbai and that recall the ornamentation on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus—formerly Victoria Terminus—a railway station built in the nineteenth century and a landmark in the city. For Kallat, the animals symbolise contemporary Mumbaikars’ fight for success and prosperity.
