In the 1970s, painter and graphic designer Kan Tai-keung incorporated Chinese landscape forms in to his paintings, which until then had been heavily influenced by Western art, design, and colour theory. In Cliffs Beyond, he double-copies a mountain from a classical Chinese painting to create a composition that is both a twist on the Tai Chi symbol and an expression of his inclination towards geometric structures. The bluish mirage brings a surrealist bent and demonstrates that landscape can be adopted as a modular component in his painting.
