This sludgy residue is what remains after boiling down 60,000 bottles of Coca-Cola over a charcoal fire for more than a year. He Xiangyu turns the symbol of desirable cosmopolitan life in 1990s China into completely unrecognisable and even toxic matter. The work emphasises the conspicuousness of consumption as he questions: is this something we really want?
