Cream of Mushroom Soup presents a close-up shot of an open can of Campbell’s Soup, its red-and-white label standing out against a blank background. From off-screen, the artist drops coins into the can. As the coins pile up inside, the surface of soup rises until it overflows and oozes out. Clinging to the sides of the can and puddling on the surface below, the viscous mixture increasingly obscures the Campbell’s label. With its clear reference to the iconic images of Campbell’s Soup cans by American Pop artist Andy Warhol, the work comments on commodification and financial speculation in the art market—with money literally displacing the can’s contents—and the larger consequences of excess under capitalism.
Xin Yunpeng operates from an expansive definition of ‘sculpture’, often producing video art, performances, and multimedia installations rather than isolated physical objects. Much of his work—like Cream of Mushroom Soup—takes a satirical view of political and social power structures.
