Daddy Project was informed by Yan Xing’s experience of growing up without a father. In an hour-long speech directed at a gallery wall, he recounts the absence of his father and the subsequent emotional and physical abuse his mother inflicted on him. Yan wrote the script based on posts published to his personal blog, and the practice of disclosing intimate details of his life has become a recurring feature of his art-making. By offering his emotional, psychological, and sexual life as a subject of scrutiny, Yan invites viewers to meditate on universal questions of love, grief, and loss.
