This loudspeaker broadcasts on repeat an extract from Mao Zedong’s official proclamation of the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949: ‘Comrades, the People’s Republic of China is established!’ The device’s design is similar to the one used in the ceremony, a reminder of the historical moment, yet it is placed in an exhibition space with no announcer in sight. With these choices, He Xiangyu makes us fill the gap between past and present with our imagination.
