With a sloped roof and four pagoda-like guardians on each side, this large-scale wooden sculpture resembles both a traditional home and a military fortress. It was handcrafted in Hoi An, Vietnam entirely from wood of the jackfruit tree. The plant carries deeper meaning for the artist as a crucial form of sustenance when he grew up in a period of war and famine. On the meticulously carved panels are decorative Chinese motifs: plum blossoms, latticework patterns, and cloud-shaped ornamentation. Looking closer, you can also see hand grenades, G.I. helmets, and guns that speak to a more recent, violent past. With its airy structure and intricate design, Dislocate presents a delicate interweaving of recent and ancient histories of Vietnam with elements of personal memory.
