Distant Thoughts No. 19 is a painting of the Englewood Cliffs in the Palisades along the Hudson River, painted while Wucius Wong lived in New Jersey. Wong heightens the drama of the cliffs, seen from above, by creating an S-shaped course for the river, alluding to the Tai Chi symbol of energy flow. The painting shows an eclectic blend of influences and adaptations: Rembrandt’s treatment of light and contrast, Turner’s romantic landscapes, and the Northern Song style of monumental landscape. Most importantly, a crisscrossed structure and a set of parallel lines, imported from Wong’s training in modern design theory, underlie the landscape formations.
