Jacqueline Brandford Ayer’s ready-to-wear cotton dresses in bright colours and printed patterns introduced a new style to Thai fashion. With her brand, Design Thai, Ayer transformed traditional motifs and natural imagery into modern compositions. After moving to Thailand from the United States, she established Design Thai with the encouragement of American entrepreneur Jim Thompson, who wanted to rejuvenate the Thai silk industry. The brand also received support from the International Basic Economy Corporation, funded by former US Vice President Nelson Rockefeller, as part of an American initiative to develop craft businesses in Thailand for international trade. Ayer’s dresses were sold locally and exported to high-end department stores throughout the 1960s.
