This drum belongs to a set of unconventional musical instrumentsmade from rubbish found in Cateura, the largest landfill in Asunción, the capital of Paraguay. In 2006, Argentinian environmental engineer and musician Favio Chávez arrived in Cateura to create youth music programmes. With no funding to buy instruments, Chávez and local residents created instruments fromsalvaged objects and scrap metal. The Recycled Orchestra of Cateura was thus formed, bringing joy, pride, and cohesion to the community. They shared their inspiring story through a series of international tours, gaining globalrecognition and success. Their ability to see waste as a source of reusable materials shows how making things can inspire change.
