Li Yongbin creates videos that focus on the human face. Often using his own face as his subject, Li produces most of his works at home with simple equipment and techniques. In Face 4, the artist placed a mirror outside the window of his apartment to reflect a Beijing street scene. In the video, he rubs away the mirror’s silver backing to reveal his face behind it. Sounds of traffic and scratching accompany the images. The video concludes with a reflection of the artist’s face against a cityscape at nightfall. The duration and meditative rigour of Li’s work invites speculation on the nature of time and identity.
