Factory Project: The Identification of 594 cm is a video documenting a physically demanding action that Tong Wenmin performed inside an iron factory in Chongqing. The performance typifies Tong’s tendency to position herself in unexpected scenarios. In the video, she holds a 594-centimeter-long strip of iron, which she beats to the ground. Over the course of twenty-five minutes, Tong expends a lot of energy to repeatedly heave the heavy iron back and forth. The loud grinding sound that occurs every time the piece of metal hits the factory floor is augmented by the noise of machinery in the background. Tong finally leaves the strip of iron behind when its flat, straight body is twisted and deformed. Through this intense and rigorous act, the artist tests the limits of her endurance and attempts to use her own body to find a connection with her surrounding environment.
