In this installation, Ni Youyu used 300 coins to create a star chart inspired by ancient Chinese cosmology. The artist hammered each coin to remove its original text and image, then adorned the flattened surface with miniature landscapes, animals, people, or body parts. Through this labour-intensive process, Ni eliminated the original monetary value of each coin. This oblique commentary on the global economy, consumerism, and the commodification of art connects humanity with nature while also offering a contemporary approach to traditional shan shui (landscape) painting.
