I open certainly you arrive the Pacific Ocean我一定把你開到太平洋
2005
I open certainly you arrive the Pacific Ocean is Hu Xiangqian’s first venture into performance art. The work marks the beginning of his longstanding practice of constructing absurd situations, premised on fundamentally impossible personal ambitions. Here, Hu attempts to row an island out to sea. He crafted a two-metre-long oar, installed it on the shore, and began to paddle. A friend filmed the action from a moving boat, giving the impression that Hu is making progress. In the context of his entire oeuvre, this work can be understood as a metaphor for Hu setting off in his career as an artist and his search for a place in the art establishment and the world.
