This oil painting depicts grey terrazzo, a floor treatment with chips—often of marble or granite—set in concrete. The precise shape and shade of each tiny chip and the resulting irregularity are realistically portrayed. Wang Guangle first represented terrazzo floors in the backgrounds of his paintings from the early 2000s, which depict beams of light projected on the floor. Upon realising the difficulty of capturing details of the terrazzo, Wang decided to make the material his main subject. Terrazzo was common in China in the 1970s and 1980s, and his memories associated with the material allow him to look inward and away from specific forms. While Wang’s paintings appear abstract, he has never been concerned with abstraction in his work. Instead, he values process and patience, giving adequate time to the presentation of each detail and allowing the work to gradually become complete. His meticulous techniques and exploration of temporality and repetition are also evident in his Coffin Paint series of paintings from 2006, which consist of layers of acrylic paint.
Wang Guangle (born 1976, Songxi) graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in 2000. He is best known for his process-based abstract painting, which is situated between realism and abstraction. Wang lives and works in Beijing.
