This is an edited photographic work that combines seven images to form a landscape. The landscape depicts craggy peaks and wooded hills overlooking misty rivers in the distance. A horizontal line runs across the middle while inexplicable vertical lines and pigmentation scatter across the work. Shao Wenhuan creates these effects by intervening in the darkroom process and playing with photographic chemicals. The acts of slathering, scraping, and corrosion add personal traces to what should be an objective representation. The work is at once photography and painting, adding to the uncertainty of the landscape we are seeing.
