Since 2005, Qiu Anxiong has merged traditional Chinese aesthetics with video to express contemporary concerns about mankind and the environment. Jiang Nan Poem is Qiu’s first digital media work. The video depicts a tree and birds—typical elements of traditional Chinese landscapes—however, here the tree is barren, and it is intermittently visited by birds flying against a motionless sky. A rhythmic soundtrack featuring low vibrations conjures a spare, poetic sensibility. The work’s title references a particular type of metrical structure in classical Chinese poetry.
