Two rubber sheets are pierced with more than 300,000 rusted iron nails. The Chinese title of the work, ji, specifically refers to execution by imperial order or a higher power. Bringing to mind a flimsy body or human skin, the nails conveying danger and pain, the work offers a metaphor for resilience, endurance, and survival in China’s recent history.
