This work uses the two independent bookstore as a blueprint to create a mixed-use space similar to a library or a conference room. From the proofed manuscript pages on the floor and the translated French literary works on the conference table to the projected slides — Yang Yong’s Skimming Over the Surface — on the wall, the artists incorporate different cultural activities such as publishing, exhibition, and research into this work to highlight the uniqueness of independent bookstores in the context of contemporary art. As a flexible place for shared knowledge and exhibitions, independent bookstores serve as an alternative to the museum and gallery circuit — these are spaces where the worlds of art and literature provide each other with endless sources of vitality and creativity.
