Gao Yuan’s Lunar Dial transforms the artist’s acrylic paintings into a dream-like film that features a cyclical narrative. A series of surreal vignettes appears throughout the fifteen-minute film. Scenes depicting dramatic changes in the landscape reflect the effects of urbanisation, technology, and people’s shifting interpersonal relationships. Metaphorical symbols also recur throughout, with three specific themes: light (the moon, traffic lights, an incandescent lightbulb), human knowledge (books, a library), and water (the ocean, droplets). The video alludes to the constancy of natural cycles, which always circle back to a new beginning. A minimal soundtrack by Pan Li combines sounds from nature, such as crashing waves and rainfall, with acoustic instruments and long periods of silence, adding a sense of melancholy to the work.
