Filipino artist Pacita Abad is known for mixed-media paintings that combine sources of inspiration from across the globe. Masks are an important theme in her work, beginning from her travels in Africa in the early 1980s. Inspired by tribal cultures, Abad developed a series on masks that incorporates trapunto. This technique was first used for decorative quilting and involves creating a raised surface by stuffing and padding the fabric. In Masai Man, Abad incorporates hand-stitched quilts with a painted surface, adding embellishments to create an abstract form that recalls a Maasai warrior’s mask. This technique reveals the importance of craftsmanship and precise composition in the artist’s work. Her colourful painting stitches together references from different geographical locations, reflecting on race, culture, and humanity as a whole.
