Hon Chi-fun’s Maternal Memory is a collage depicting a peaceful lake surrounded by steep, rocky walls. The grey and blue cliffs are composed of quick, controlled expressionistic strokes layered over calligraphic markings. The lake, in contrast, is a solid tone of blue, evoking boundless depth. A cluster of houses sitting atop the hills appear small compared to the towering cliffs and vast lake before them, reflecting man’s relationship to nature. Here, Hon’s painterly strokes evoke the monumentality of Chinese shanshui paintings. Created during the 1960s, the work shows Hon’s practice of breaking free from traditional ink-and-brush techniques and illustrates his early exploration of material, line, shape, and colour using collage and the textures of acrylic paint.
