Model, ATL Container Freight Station (now ATL Logistics Centre) (1979–1994), Hong Kong香港亞洲貨櫃大廈(現為亞洲貨櫃物流中心)(1979–1994)模型
1987
The ATL Logistics Centre, realised by Dennis Lau & Ng Chun Man Architects & Engineers, is located at Hong Kong’s Kwai Chung container terminal. Completed in phases between 1986 and 1994, the project holds the Guinness World Record for largest industrial structure.
Positioned lengthwise along the dock, the centre is made up of a loading zone and two multistorey rectangular buildings; together, they contain more than eight hundred thousand square metres of floor space. Tenants reach each level directly through circular, gently sloped ramps that fit three lanes of lorry traffic. As a model of the project shows, the rear building’s facade extends the concrete stripes of the ramps, reinforcing the visual rhythm of the massive stacked plates. Inside, the complex hosts not only temperature-controlled warehouses and office spaces, but also post offices, convenience stores, and recreational and conference facilities. An average of eight thousand vehicles visit the site every day.
The ATL Logistics Centre embodies Hong Kong’s significance to the international shipping industry, consolidating development that began in the 1960s. At the same time, packed into an intensive urban fabric, its multiple facets offer an alternative to low-density logistical landscapes worldwide.
