Model, Exchange Square I, II & III (circa 1983–1985), Hong Kong香港交易廣場ㄧ、二及三期(約1983至1985年)模型
circa 1983–1985
Exchange Square is a complex of three towers in Central, Hong Kong, designed by Palmer and Turner in 1988. Palmer and Turner, the oldest architectural firm operating in Asia, has played a major role in shaping Hong Kong’s skyline. Home to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, Exchange Square embodies the city’s identity as a dynamic, international financial centre.
The towers’ sculptural forms and postmodern palette of silver glass and polished granite are characteristic of the work of Remo Riva, who became the firm’s lead designer in the mid-1980s. With just over fifty storeys each, Exchange Square I and II are composite bundles of angular prisms and cylinders. The towers are joined at one edge, framing a low corner structure with a green space on its roof. The third, smaller tower is set on the other end of a landscaped plaza, which also accommodates another low, square building. The entire complex is set on a podium covering a public bus station, and incorporates connections with the pedestrian circulation networks in this busy part of the city.
