Amidst China’s rapid transformation, the Urban Village research project devises strategies to reconcile and improve older residential areas facing demolition and other pressures from market-driven development. URBANUS identifies the ‘village in city’ phenomenon—dense, informal settlements among newer skyscrapers and infrastructure—as an important housing typology and a by-product of economic growth in the Pearl River Delta. These unregulated and self-sustaining urban enclaves absorb influxes of migrants from rural areas and accommodate many low-income residents on little land. URBANUS seeks to enhance the living conditions of these villages whilst retaining their intimate scale and vibrant characteristics.
Xinzhou Village is a project on a sixty-thousand-square-metre site near the centre of Shenzhen. The mountainous complex spans two blocks and is split into two components. The upper part is a large, continuous form with a variety of apartment units and public spaces. The lower part is a series of smaller, fragmented shops, cafes, and amenities that respond to the scale, paths, and layout of the existing village. The model distinguishes the two components by representing the upper portion in a single silver surface, and the lower bits as independent, multicoloured Plexiglas blocks.
