Yang Jiechang’s studies in Chinese painting at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, as well as his experience of living in Europe since 1989, inspired him to revisit his past as a member of the Red Guard and to develop a subversive style that infuses the concerns of literati painting with strategies of contemporary art. In Mustard Seed Garden III, he deploys a standard depiction of trees, mountains, and rolling clouds as illustrated in the classical pedagogical manual to create a tight, overwhelming and panoramic view of landscape. But far from being a paradisiacal imitation of classical paintings, the landscape here becomes the backdrop of a horrendous scene (in the lower right corner), serving as both a critique and reminder of painful episodes in recent Chinese history.
