Obsession Century Celebration is an animation based on large-scale ceramic dioramas. The sculptural displays feature two thousand hand-made clay figurines, each of which represents a participant in a historical scenario: a military parade in Tiananmen Square, a public trial of class enemies during the Cultural Revolution, and a dance performance. Through the animation of these clay objects, Zhou explores the question of progress and the place of the individual within the collective. In its context, the work can also be read as a meditation on political history.
