Off Takes consists of discarded footage from Hao Jingban’s expansive Beijing Ballroom Project (2012–2016), in which the artist explores the individual memories and personal histories of ballroom dancers. Beijing Ballroom Project revisits the history of ballroom-dance culture in China from the 1950s to the post–Cultural Revolution era in the late 1970s.
In Off Takes, each dancer’s story correlates with the shifting courses of social movements in China. For example, a woman had once danced with Premier Zhou Enlai, but in 1957 was placed under investigation for her ballroom-dancing activities. Hao’s voiceover offers a reflection on her experiences with the protagonists of her work.
