Hu Liu is known for her monochromatic drawings that attempt to capture the sublime experience of space within our environments. To add depth to a composition, Hu used graphite pencil to layer lines on paper, in a process that can take several months to complete. Here, a dark silhouette of a tree stands in stark contrast against a bright, cloudless sky. Playing with the aesthetic possibilities of black, white, and grey, the drawing, seen from afar, looks like a black-and-white photograph consisting of two tones only. However, a closer look reveals tones of grey within the tree branches and various textures created by Hu’s innumerable lines. Taking a contemplative approaching to drawing, Hu reduced the composition into its simplest elements, focusing her process on the intensity of tone and line.
