Kwan Sheung Chi’s Plan A to Z to End My Life is a black-and-white video laced with dark humour, exploring themes of failure, loss, and death. The video comprises consecutive vignettes of the artist attempting to commit suicide in various ways. Each method is denoted by a letter: A for asphyxiation, B for bomb, and so on. The montage stops on an unfinished note, leaving viewers with an uncertain ending that implies the death of the artist. The series of morbid self-portraits reflects a particular moment in the artist’s practice when a sense of failure, obscurity, and dejection was at the forefront. Like many of Kwan’s conceptual works, the video examines the feeling of helplessness shared by Kwan and his contemporaries in relation to the socio-political situations of Hong Kong, especially after the handover in 1997, when the city’s political future was surrounded by uncertainties.
