Playing at Home / Playing Away: The Maze of Reality主場/客場:現實迷宮
2002
Taking the invitation to participate in the 50th Venice Biennale as a departure point, Playing at Home/Playing Away: The Maze of Reality aimed to start a cultural dialogue between the visitors to Arsenale in Venice and those at the East Coast residential complex in Shenzhen. The ambitious multi-venue exhibition brought forth debates on the relevance of major international art events to local contexts, by establishing a cultural connection through the Internet. A key component of the project was Vitamin Creative Space’s collaboration with Xu Tan and Jin Jiangbo in setting up simultaneous live broadcasts in Venice and Shenzhen, similar to the way football matches are broadcast. Eight artists who participated in Hou Hanru’s Canton Express at the Arsenale were invited to create additional works to be displayed in Shenzhen. Artists such as Chu Yun, Wang Lei, and Yangjiang Group’s Sun Qinglin and Chen Zaiyan also took part. Meanwhile, magazine Urban China’s editorin- chief, Jiang Jun, shared his field research on China’s urbanisation. With works ranging from photography, video, sculpture, to installation, the Shenzhen venue turned into a site-specific cultural space that explored contemporary life in southern China. Both exhibition venues became expanded temporary sites for trans-local art activities.
