Punishment of Illegal Land Use, No.1―No.26違法用地處罰, 第1-26號
2007–2008
This installation consists of twenty-six framed documents related to Zheng Guogu’s development of an agricultural area on the outskirts of Yangjiang, a second-tier city in the Pearl River Delta and Zheng’s home town, since the early 2000s. Inspired by the Age of Empires series of video games, which involves building civilisations, Zheng initially called the development Age of Empire, and later renamed it Liao Garden. It has since become his residence, his studio, an art project in itself, and the subject of several of his works. The building project involves negotiation with different parties, as well as the violation of building codes and illegal use of land. Here, in a work that demonstrates Zheng’s integration of art and life, he reflects on how he has been punished for his use of the land.
Zheng Guogu (born 1970, Yangjiang) graduated from the Printmaking Department of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 1992. A key member of the Yangjiang Group, he creates conceptual work in the form of photography, calligraphy, painting, and video installation. His work addresses the profound shifts of southern Chinese culture, specifically the Pearl River Delta region, with a particular focus on local culture in a time of globalisation. Zheng lives and works in Yangjiang.
