Dai Chenlian uses the traditional techniques of Chinese shadow puppetry to recreate a ‘family recipe’ through art. Figures manipulated by rods produce shadows on a translucent screen, acting out traditional folktales, memories that Dai’s mother passed on to him, and elements of the artist’s imagination. Humans, household objects, and animals such as dogs, swallows, and ostriches populate the work. Dai’s rich narrative, imaginatively woven together from elements of a shared past, seems to define a contemporary experience as inextricable from historical inheritance.
