This cup, produced by the Hong Kong–based manufacturer Star Industrial Company, is both a functional object and a mobile advertisement. It is printed with promotional text and images of plastic pails and jugs—examples of the company’s other products. Alongside this implicit suggestion of a sales catalogue, drawings of smiling women carrying the same containers show the products put into action. These visual reminders of the company’s wares and the idealised images of their users portray the ease and convenience that plastic goods are meant to introduce to the routines of everyday life.
The export of consumer goods was one of the main economic goals of the Hong Kong government and manufacturers’ associations in the post-war period. Manufacturers like the Star Industrial worked to create simple designs that would find success in a wide range of geographic and cultural contexts. Plastic as a material also experienced a widespread growth in acceptance, as increasingly lower costs made it more accessible and familiar.
