Red A Silver Jubilee Exhibition 1967 Star Pavilion tray, no. 781紅A牌1967年銀禧工展星光館紀念碟
circa 1967
This plastic tray commemorates the twenty-fifth Exhibition of Hong Kong Products, a programme of periodic events established in 1938 by the Chinese Manufacturers’ Association to promote Hong Kong–made goods to local and international audiences. The tray’s printed design identifies its maker as Star Industrial and depicts the company’s pavilion at the exhibition, a striking architectural statement that projects an image of corporate innovation and confidence. The tray has a simple shape: a rectangle with rounded corners and edges, along with two projecting handles with concentric ribs to aid the grip. The arrangement of forms was designed to accommodate the specific needs of plastic-moulding technology, highlighting the growing technical expertise of Hong Kong manufacturers of the period.
In the post-war context of economic expansion and increasingly globalised trade, events like the Exhibition of Hong Kong Products were an important means of promoting the city as a centre of manufacturing consumer objects. Founded in 1949, Star Industrial was one of Hong Kong’s major producers of homewares and was an active participant in the export boom. Still headquartered in Hong Kong, the company continues to produce numerous plastic wares.
