Red Mark Jumping between Black and White紅印在黑和白之間跳動
1981
After devoting his early career to Socialist-Realist propaganda oil paintings during the Cultural Revolution,in the late1970s, Qiu Deshu turned to abstraction to reclaim a sense of individuality and freedom of expression that he had long desired. He chose to work with ink, a traditional material, utilising drips, splashes, and ink wash effects. He also added enlarged seal patterns, another featureof traditional Chinese painting, as a formal element. In this painting, the vermilion seals in biomorphic shapes stand out against a dense black sea of ink, which, for the artist, represents a new direction for painting, making innovative use of heritage materials to discover a myriad of new expressions.
